Sword tassels jiansui.

Mandarin Mansion sword tassels

The sword tassel as we know it today probably derived from a cord attached to a sword and the wrist to prevent losing it. The end of these cords often had small tassels that became bigger until they became what they are today.

The idea of using it to distract the opponent is highly likely to be based on fantasy made up by those who did not practise sparring, rather than historical truth. In a duel where movements are often less than perfect the tassel is more likely to get in the way rather than being of any help. Moreover, when swinging the sword the tassel often comes first, making it a good indication on where the opponent's sword is going for the experienced swordsmen, rather than a distraction.

Our tassels are hand made, and of very fine quality using only cord and wooden parts. They come in red, black, brown, pink and white with a light blue touch.
